WQKR is a community-oriented “hometown” radio station serving Sumner County (Portland, White House, Westmoreland, Gallatin) and Robertson County (White House, Greenbrier, Cross Plains and Orlinda) as well as south central Kentucky (Simpson County and Franklin). Our signal is clearly heard from Nashville to Bowling Green (north/south) and Springfield to Lafayette (east/west), and on 95.9 FM and 1270 AM (and on the Internet at WQKR.com). The people who listen to us are the people who are involved in the community, and want to keep up with what is happening in their hometown.
The focus of our 24-hour broadcast day is on our live local programs: “"Good Morning, Portland",” Monday through Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 a.m. with Don Curry and Dale Sprouse, and "“The Women’'s Roundtable"” at 4:00 p.m.
Because Portland, Franklin and White House have only weekly newspapers, WQKR is the only daily source of local news for area residents.
The music we play is “"Classic Hits",” and features pop records that topped the music charts between 1965 and 1995.
WQKR has local news every hour, at the top of the hour, along with national news, sports and a community events calendar.
As Portland’'s radio station, we are the voice of the Portland High School football and basketball Panthers, and broadcast their games and coaches’' shows throughout the year. All Panthers' games are also streamed live on the Internet at WQKR.com.
We are the only Sumner County radio station to broadcast University of Tennessee football and basketball games, the Indy 500 and Allstate 400, "March Madness" and much more.
The residents of this area listen to our radio station because we give them news and programming they cannot get anywhere else---news about them, their friends and their family, and their community.

The "showpiece" of local programming on WQKR is our morning talk show, heard every day from 7:00 until 9:00, and listened to, at least sometime during the week, by almost every adult in the Portland area. Featuring hosts Dale Sprouse and Don Curry, one reason for the popularity of the program is that Dale and Don are the long-time voices of Portland Panthers football and basketball---the most popular locally produced programs on WQKR. These guys know the community and the people who live here, and they make the morning show come alive with local news, sports, weather and traffic as well as interesting interviews with community leaders. You'’ll tune in one day and hear the mayor; another day and catch a teacher talking about the rewards of working with our young people; and yet another with a health care professional talking about strides in medicine and how we can feel better and live longer. It’'s local radio at its best!
WQKR is the exclusive home of the Portland High School girls and boys basketball teams. Join Tim Coker for the live broadcast of the selected broadcasts of Portland Panther Basketball.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch - Conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. A severe thunderstorm contains large damaging hail of 1 inch (2.7 cm) diameter or larger, and/or damaging winds greater than 58 mph (95 km/h or 50 knots) or greater. Isolated tornadoes are also possible but not expected to be the dominant severe weather event. These watches are issued for large areas by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, and are usually valid for five to eight hours.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning - A severe thunderstorm is indicated by Doppler weather radar or sighted by Skywarn spotters. A severe thunderstorm contains large damaging hail of 1 inch in diameter or larger, and/or damaging winds of 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater. These warnings are currently issued on a polygonal basis.

These watches are issued by the Weather Forecast Office and are usually issued six to twenty-four hours in advance of expected flood potential. In Canada, a Heavy Rainfall Warning has a similar meaning.
Flash Flood Warning - Flash flooding is occurring, imminent, or highly likely. A flash flood is a flood that occurs within 6 hours of excessive rainfall and that poses a threat to life and/or property. Ice jams and dam failures can also cause flash floods. These warnings are issued on a county by county basis by the local Weather Forecast Office and are generally in effect for up to 6 hours.
Winter Storm Warning - Hazardous winter weather conditions that pose a threat to life and/or property are occurring, imminent, or highly likely. The generic term, winter storm warning, is used for a combination of two or more of the following winter weather events; heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, and strong winds.
Winter Storm Watch - Hazardous winter weather conditions including significant accumulations of snow and/or freezing rain and/or sleet are possible generally within 36 hours. These watches are issued by the Weather Service Forecast Office.
Winter Weather Advisory - Hazardous winter weather conditions are occurring, imminent, or likely. Conditions will cause a significant inconvenience and if caution is not exercised, may result in a potential threat to life and/or property.
Ice Storm Warning - Heavy ice accumulations are imminent and the criteria for amounts varies over different county warning areas. Accumulations range from 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6 to 12 mm) or more of freezing rain. In Canada, these are known as Freezing Rain Warnings.
Freezing Rain Advisory - A trace to 1/4 inch (1–6 mm) of expected freezing rain is needed in any county warning area to prompt a freezing rain advisory.
Flood Warning - General or areal flooding of streets, low-lying areas, urban storm drains, creeks, and small streams is occurring, imminent, or highly likely. Flood warnings are issued for flooding that occurs more than 6 hours after the excessive rainfall. These warnings are issued on a county by county basis by the local Weather Forecast Office and are generally in effect for 6 to 12 hours.
Heat Advisory - Extreme heat index making it feel hot, typically between 105 and 110 °F (41 and 43 °C) for up to 3 hours during the day and at or above 80 °F (27 °C) at night for two consecutive nights. Specific criteria varies over different county warning areas.
Excessive Heat Warning - Extreme heat index making it feel very hot, typically above 110 °F (43 °C) for 3 hours or more during the day for two consecutive days or above 110 °F (43 °C) at any time. Specific criteria varies over different county warning areas.

Watches & Warnings Explained
The potential for severe thunderstorms and/or tornadoes is forecast and categorized by the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center, which issues watches and warnings in conjunction with the Weather Service's local offices around the country.
If tornadoes are possible or imminent in your area, the National Weather Service will issue one or more of the following watches and warnings.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
A severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are conducive to the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Severe thunderstorms produce hail 3/4 of an inch in diameter and/or wind gusts of at least 58 mph.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
A severe thunderstorm warning means that a severe thunderstorm has been observed by spotters or indicated on radar, and is either occurring or imminent in the warning area. These warnings typically last for a period of 30 to 60 minutes.
Tornado Watch
A tornado watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms and multiple tornadoes in and close to the watch area. People in the affected areas are encouraged to be vigilant in preparation for severe weather.
Tornado Warning
A tornado warning means that a tornado has been sighted by spotters or indicated on radar, and is occurring or imminent in the warning area. If a tornado warning is issued, people in the affected area are strongly encouraged to take cover immediately.

"Points to Ponder" is a series of positive messages designed to help us "recognize the sunshine" in our everyday lives. They are created and written by Portland Church of Christ minister Rusty Hills, and are heard through the day, seven days a week, on WQKR.
Rusty Hills was born and raised in Corinth, Mississippi. He attended Freed-Hardeman University where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1996. After working for three years as an accountant, he decided to leave that field to begin preaching full-time. He had the opportunity to move back to
Corinth and work with his home congregation, the West Corinth Church of Christ. While there he also returned to Freed-Hardeman and in 2001 earned a Master of Ministry degree. After working with the church in Corinth for five years, Rusty moved to Portland in 2004 to work with the Portland Church of Christ. Rusty has spoken in meetings and lectureships in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee. Rusty and his wife Andrea, have three children - a five-year-old son Tyler and three-year-old twin daughters, Ashley and Ally.
